Baywood Greens

Our Rating: 97

Friendliness of Staff: 9

They have a lot of staff all over the course. From the bag attendants to the pro shop staff to the course starter and marshals, everyone is very friendly. I found it easy to strike up a conversation with most everyone. Just short of excellent.

Facilities/Pro Shop: 10

Starting with the pro shop, every part of their facilities are fantastic. Their pro shop is very large with plenty of merchandise. Sure they have a putting green, but the range is top notch. It’s covered and has either platforms or grass to hit off. Their clubhouse and restaurants are world class. Great place to have lunch or dinner with the family.

Quality/Value of Food/Snacks: 9

They offer a great opportunity to enjoy a nice lunch or dinner on a beautiful deck overlooking the course. I didn’t get the chance to have a full meal here, but several players I talked to said it was delicious. The prices are a bit more expensive but the atmosphere makes it worthwhile.

Fairway Conditions: 10

And I thought the fairways at Blackstone National in Sutton, MA were great, these were better! You could literally push your hand on them and they felt like a sponge. You don’t even have to replace your divots because they constantly work on it, they specifically say so when you begin your round. Yeah there were a couple that were a bit brown, but in this section of the country we’re basically experiencing a draught! Perfect!

Greens Conditions: 7

Overall, they were soft, rolled true and were pretty healthy. The problem with these greens is that they are fairly beat up. It appears that most people don’t fix their divot marks. While the starter tells you, a lot of people don’t remember. They should put signs around the greens reminding you. With how amazing this course is, they need to enforce the simple rules to make sure it doesn’t go downhill, being a public course. Because of the amount of divots, quite a few putts will be bumpy.

Scenery: 10

While there’s no real spectacular views, the overall scenery is beautiful. From water-lined holes to the island greens and fairways to the landscaping, this course is breathtaking. I’ve played some amazing courses in Hawaii and Mexico, and while this one is different, it is amazing in its own way. The flowers and landscaping have to be the best I’ve ever seen, and it all starts with the waterfalls and fountains leading up to the clubhouse. The beautifully flowered and shrub-lined bridges on the island fairway hole and the 18th are absolutely picturesque! What a great place to have your wedding.

Difficulty of Course: 8

You have 5 different tee box options to choose from and while it caters to all levels of golfers, the average hacker will probably struggle but should play here anyway. There is a ton of water on this course and some enormous bunkers. Their par-3’s, other than one, are very tough and require you to carry water on several of them. If you’re straight off the tee and avoid the water and bunkers, you can score well, but bring plenty of balls just in case.

Value Received: 9

They really should provide free divot tools in the clubhouse and hand them to every one before they begin their round. Every cart is equipped with GPS, where you can order food for the turn. Your cart is also equipped with a cooler filled with ice for your beer. On each cart is a coupon for a 25-cent beer when you buy one at full price. 18 holes with cart runs you $105 in the morning but it’s worth every penny. I had to rent clubs and they had Mizuno, Cobra, or Titleist to choose from, but they don’t give you a towel to clean your irons after your shot. For what you get in return, this course needs to be added to your must play list.

Speed of Play/Design of Course: 10

This course does a great job managing the speed of play. The pro shop has an extremely elaborate GPS system that tracks every cart, changing colors when carts lag behind. They then radio the marshal to have them pick up the pace of play. Whoever designed this course did a fantastic job and should be consulted with when designing or changing your course. Amazing rock walls, flower boxes, waterfalls, and numerous other features make it one of the nicest layouts I’ve seen. Play began a bit slow, but the course really does a great job to manage it.

19th Hole: 10

They have a great restaurant with some beautiful decks overlooking the course. People have said the food is great and it must be because they also have a gorgeous banquet room where they host weddings…there was one getting started when I was leaving. It’s a great place to grab a drink and some lunch or dinner after your round or with your family.

Bonus: +5

There is a beer cart on the course. (They actually have 2!)

Comments:

What an amazing golf course, and who would have thought, in Delaware. Great upcoming, hidden gem. I guess they’re also building an additional 9 holes and there are some beautiful condos for sale at still an affordable price. If you’re in the area or make the journey, you’ll immediately fall in love with it. Driving in, you’ll feel like you are entering a private resort. I can’t believe this course is public. If I lived in this area, I would love to have had my wedding here because there’s some great photo opportunities on the course. This course rivals any I’ve played. I even had to bring my wife up to see it and they let me take a cart with her on the course to take some pictures! There website has plenty of information that about playing there that you should read before making the ride over (even hints on how to play each hole). Make it a point to play here!
