Bretwood Golf Course (South)

Bretwood Golf Course (South)

Our Rating: 79

FRIENDLINESS OF STAFF: 8

FACILITIES/PRO SHOP: 7

The pro shop was well stocked with everything from shirts to balls. There is a small driving range and two putting greens. Better than most of the municipal courses and older country clubs here in New England. My only criticism was that while the exterior of the club house looked immaculate the inside could use a little updating.

QUALITY/VALUE OF FOOD/SNACKS: 8

I think the two of us ate lunch and had a beer and soda each for under $20. Beers were only $3 each draft or bottle.

FAIRWAY CONDITIONS: 9

I’ll give them a pass on the flooding because several inches of rain fell two days before. The fairways were freshly mowed and well maintained. There were was some damage from other golfers but nothing that the course itself was responsible for.

GREENS CONDITIONS: 9

Not a dead patch on them and despite the rains, they were well drained and not soggy.

SCENERY: 10

The Ashuelot River runs through the course and there are many covered bridges and just some great New Hampshire Scenery.

DIFFICULTY OF COURSE: 8

Lot’s of dog legs and a water hazards on almost every hole.

VALUE RECEIVED: 8

I really wished I could have played the North Course but it was $53 a person for 18 holes including the cart. I can see that course easily costing 75 or more in a more urban area.

SPEED OF PLAY/DESIGN OF COURSE: 6

They don’t take Tee Times on weekdays unless it’s a holiday and they also usually have two courses open. When we played they had a pretty good line ready to tee off because of a tournament on the North Course. Also, with so much water in the design of the course, you found yourself needing to re-hit or drop often.

19TH HOLE: 6

Great outdoor porch, good bear selection, the food was OK and not expensive. BUT, the carpet needed to be replaced 15 years ago and the the lighting was a bit dim for my tastes. Also it was cash only and I left my greenbacks at home.

BONUS: 0

There is no beer cart on the course.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Aside from some vending machines by the 10th hole not even a water fountain to be found. Overall I did like this course a lot. The course itself was well maintained and I’d love to play it again when it’s not busy. Maybe take a vacation day on a Tuesday in the fall to play it again.

One of my favorite places to play. Hard to find a more laid-back, enjoyable round of golf. Absolutely agree with the author about lack of drinking water. (been going for forty years; always been a problem). Absolutely disagree about the 19th hole. Where else can you enjoy a cold beer on a second floor shaded farmer’s porch in a cane rocker and look down on groups finishing on TWO different eighteenth holes?
