The Legend at Bergamont

Our Rating: 97

FRIENDLINESS OF STAFF: 8

FACILITIES/PRO SHOP: 9

The one weakness here is the pro shop. It is massive, but didn’t have a ton of inventory that I would be interested in. I like looking around pro shops for the perfect golf hat, but they only carried Titleist hats and some course logo’d hats. Otherwise, the clubhouse is phenomenal. It’s a huge, gorgeous building, with an amazing view of the area. The upstairs banquet area can hold a few hundred people and the men’s locker room is huge. If the pro shop had some more “wow” in it, they’d be getting a 10.

QUALITY/VALUE OF FOOD/SNACKS: 8

The food was part of the tournament and it wasn’t bad. Unfortunately, we missed the dinner due to playing some extra holes, but they put on a reasonable lunch, with a good sausage dog before heading out for the round.

FAIRWAY CONDITIONS: 10

Nary a weed was found in the fairways. They were in mint condition, groomed perfectly. After a rainstorm came through, the first section of the 18th fairway was a bit soggy, but I’m sure it drained quickly.

GREENS CONDITIONS: 10

The greens were in great shape and rolled perfectly. At first, once we dialed in the line, we rolled off 5 birdies in a row, thanks to some good putting. After reaching -5, it wasn’t the greens fault that we didn’t snag another birdie.

SCENERY: 10

The view looking out from the clubhouse is spectacular. A Google image search of this course will give you a ton of phenomenal pictures. The course is lined by some gorgeous houses, especially down the 10th thru 13th fairways. Some of the homes Zillow for over $1MM and they looked worth it! From the clubhouse and looking down from a couple holes on the front, you get a great view of the region.

DIFFICULTY OF COURSE: 8

I’d call this a fun and challenging course. Some holes require precision drives and you can head to OB quick. But there was not any enormous par-4’s that you could not reach in two. Generally, a good drive had you within 160 yards. I’d love to play this course not in a tournament to see how I’d handle.

VALUE RECEIVED: 10

The course looks to be pushing their memberships, but you will find that the rates are a bargain for playing as a non-member. I would fully expect them to command over $100 a round, but the most a non-member will pay is $84 for a weekend morning, including the cart. If you book as a 4-some, you will save $15 per person. Amazing deal to play here!

SPEED OF PLAY/DESIGN OF COURSE: 9

The tournament was doubled up on every hole, so we fully expected to have some wait time to tee off, but play wound up moving along. The only back-up was on the 8th hole, which is a reachable par-4 that follows a par-3. I think we had a 3 group wait there. Otherwise, play moved along great the whole round, even considering the rain storm that moved in and bounced players off the course for a bit.

19TH HOLE: 10

The bar here is fantastic. I didn’t get to order a beverage from it, but to grab a beer and look out over the back 9 was a great sight.

BONUS: +5

Beer Cart on the Course

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Oddly, we didn’t see the beer cart until our 10th hole, but she was out there!
Other Comments: The Legend at Bergamont really set the standard for me for courses in Wisconsin. This course could easily be a private only club, commanding top dollar. I am glad to see that the public can play here at a very reasonable rate. If you’re traveling to Madison for work and are looking for a place to play, sneak on over to The Legend. You won’d be disappointed.
